That’s So 2006…

Here’s an old book meme that I stumbled across.  I’ve never actually done a meme before; the urge is upon me.  So here we go:

Bold the ones you’ve read, italicize the ones you’ve started but haven’t finished, cross out the ones you hated, and underline the ones on your book shelf!  Combine indicators as appropriate.

The Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown
The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger – I disliked, but didn’t hate.  Holden was a whiny git.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy – Douglas Adams
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
The Time Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger
His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – J. K. Rowling
Life of Pi – Yann Martel
Animal Farm: A Fairy Story – George Orwell
Catch-22 – Joseph Heller
The Hobbit – J. R. R. Tolkien
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time – Mark Haddon
Lord of the Flies - William Golding
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
1984 – George Orwell
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – J. K. Rowling
One Hundred Years of Solitude – Gabriel García Márquez
Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden
The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold
Slaughterhouse 5 – Kurt Vonnegut
Angels and Demons – Dan Brown
Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk
Neuromancer – William Gibson
Cryptonomicon – Neal Stephenson
The Secret History – Donna Tartt
A Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte – I have little patience for people who manufacture their own misery.
Brave New World – Aldous Huxley
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – C. S. Lewis
Middlesex – Jeffrey Eugenides
Cloud Atlas – David Mitchell
The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë – one of my all-time favorites
Good Omens – Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman – I just re-read this!
Atonement – Ian McEwan

The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
The Bell Jar – Sylvia Plath
Dune – Frank Herbert

Q: What’s Better than a Kitten?

August 19, 2008 · 3 Comments

A: Two Kittens!

Meet Ivy and Eddy (both females):

Ivy is black-and-white, boldly self-possessed, but sweet and laid-back (for a kitten). Eddy is a brown tabby, 6 different shades of crazy, hilarious and affectionate. They’re better than TV — Pokermon and I sat on the couch Saturday night after the kids were in bed and just watched them chase each other. They were both ecstatic at being released from the rescue kennels, and they expressed their joy at high velocity (and altitude) for at least 2 hours.

They’re both just over 3 months old. Ivy’s only about a week older than Eddy, but you can tell she’s going to be much bigger. The differences in their frames is really interesting. Being babies, of course they sleep a lot.

But once they awaken, their true identities are revealed: Crazy Eddy and Ivy the Terrible!

Are you addressing I?

You haz password?

Eat your heart out, Olan Mills.

Teh Crazee. I has it.

I Pwned da PomPom.

“Ivy, be a dear and eviscerate that effing flashy thing, will you?”
“I’m on it.”

And here’s some cat tree action.

We’re ever so pleased. :-D

Squeeeeeee!

August 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

I can has kitteh! I finally got up the nerve to broach the Cat Acquisition Sans Declawing subject with my mother, and she caved before the implacable logic of Soft Paws. (How pathetic is it that I’m having to ask my mom’s permission for stuff at the age of 34?  Don’t answer that.)

Of course, talking to other cat owners has convinced me that Soft Paws aren’t actually necessary for sane people, but my mother is insane on a few subjects. This is one of them. Just don’t tell her I said so.

KITTEH!!!!

I’m killing time online until everyone is dressed and ready to leave the house. PetSmart is having an adopt-a-thon today. Even if we don’t find the cat(s) of our dreams today, just knowing that it’s in the future gives me a huge happy.

Oh, the cat I’d had my eye on before was adopted in late June. Otherwise, I’d be on the phone this instant to the relevant rescue group.
